Nature-based Solutions to Counter Riverbank Erosion
3C expanded its work in southern Laos on nature-based solutions to adapt to climate change. Stronger storms at Don Xom island have caused the Mekong River to flow faster. This also caused many areas of the island’s riverbank to erode faster than normal. The village’s main road in front of the temple was partially washed away from a storm in October 2025.
In February 2026, 3C supported Don Xom to erect a “rock wall” to help prevent further erosion of the riverbank. Villagers collected rocks from the Mekong River and placed them in steel cages to hold up the riverbank. Sand from the river’s sandbars were used to fill the gaps between the “rock wall” and the road.
As much as possible, natural materials were used as a barrier to stop erosion. Using rocks and sand, water will still be able to flow through, but the speed will be reduced and sediment along the riverbank can be retained within the “rock wall.”
There are other areas around the island that are eroded. 3C hopes to be able to provide further support to those areas, allowing the villagers to be resilient to the impacts of climate change.
