Nature-based Solutions
to Adapt to Climate Impacts

Nature-based solutions (NBS) such as reforestation can help counter the impacts of climate change.  In the 4,000 Islands area of southern Laos, many islands nestled along the Mekong River are now facing impacts of climate change such as hotter climates, unpredictable rainfall affecting agricultural harvests, flooding, and soil erosion.  There are few income opportunities aside from fishing and even fish stocks are decreasing due to climate change and other anthropogenic activities.

In 2023, 3C and its partner, Last Forests, assessed the situation in Siphandone and recommended NBS for local communities to adapt to climate change.  As not much assistance has been provided to the communities, following a fund raising campaign, 3C was able to acquire funds to implement NBS.

In May and June 2025, 3C was at Don Xom, Siphandone, Laos, to provide fruit trees, bamboo and local herb seedlings to villagers to help them adapt to the impacts of climate change. These plants will provide food, shade and supplementary income from product sales.
